Într-un spital, în Belgia/ In a hospital, in Belgium

[English version below]

***

Last week I had my appendix removed - an appendectomy, as doctors call it. Yes, all of a sudden, that banal appendix put an end to all my energy and all the work, dance, or traveling.

But I decided to write about this experience, since this was the first time I was hospitalized in a country other than Romania. And although I had known the Belgian medical system previously, I never realized how different it is here to Romania’s hospitals.

How I ended up in the ER

I had abdominal pain for about a week, but with ups and downs: I had days when the cramps did not go easily, I had days when nothing hurt and I was full of life and joy. I thought that the pain is caused by my chronic illness (one which triggers stomach pain when there’s too much stress, fatigue or chaotic eating in my life). None of this was happening, but I was thinking that maybe my body was taking revenge for the last couple of months of 2019. Then it was a Tuesday when my stomach ached all day long. Although I was at work, I could barely move and at any moment I was looking for a way to sit so that the pain would go away; drink a proper tea/ take some painkillers so that I manage to feel a bit better. Nothing really worked, so in the afternoon I went to see a general practitioner at work. He told me that it was definitely my long-time illness causing all the pain, so she gave me a strong treatment to calm my stomach for the next few hours and a long-term treatment to avoid such seizures. Pleased with the idea that I will overcome this inconvenience and be able to fully focus on the meeting of defence ministers that was just starting the next day, I took my treatment and an hour later I went home to rest and get back on my feet.

The idea of appendicitis hadn’t crossed my mind at all. Not even the doctor thought of this, since I had no pain in the lower abdomen, no pain or numbness of the legs, nothing to indicate a possible appendicitis.

And yet, when I got home, I couldn't even warm up after a hot shower, the pain was still there  4 hours after taking the painkillers, I had chills and I was shaking all over. I thought I had a fever and the thermometer confirmed: 38.6. Then I decided to go to the ER - it was around 8 in the evening.

I arrived at Saint Luc Hospital, where I usually go to my gastroenterologist every 6 months for keeping my illness under observation. In the ER, I waited about 10 minutes to enter the triage, where I told the nurse what was wrong with me and where she decided how serious my condition is. After the triage, I arrived in a large waiting room, where there were at least 20 people in all sorts of medical conditions. After asking a nurse for more info, I found out that there were 4 people before me. Somehow, I was calmer, the constant pain was replaced by cramps - terribly unbearable.

The surgery

Somewhere around 10 o'clock I arrived in a sick room, I sat on a bed where I was examined by the resident on duty. He noted carefully everything I told him. After a while I was examined by the doctor. Afterwards - blood tests and while I was waiting for the results the doctor came to see me and prescribed painkillers for the relentless cramps. The results indicated that I had an infection, which I also suspected when I realized I had a fever and decided to go to the hospital. Then the doctor told me he suspected appendicitis, but he wanted me to have an ultrasound to have confirmed diagnosis. At the ultrasound, it was clear within the first two minutes - my appendix had to be removed.

It was 2 AM when the emergency doctor told me that he would contact the surgeon, the anaesthesiologist and depending on the schedule, they would operate me in the morning.

I didn't really understand this hurry - I was convinced that I could go to work one more day (I wasn’t just to miss this ministerial meeting - there were people counting on me to do my job) - of course, there were the painkillers making me feel a little better and thinking I could conquer the world. The doctors immediately brought me back to the real world and told me that the surgery should be done immediately and that it was very good that I had not eaten anything for about 10 hours - for anaesthesia.

They put me in a separate room, in a very comfortable bed, the nurse put my perfusion with all kinds of substances to prepare me for the surgery and so I stayed there, with Bogdan in a chair next to me, falling asleep for dozens of minutes, then up waking and so on until 4 in the morning, when the surgeon came and told me that I am scheduled for surgery at 7 in the morning. He explained that they would put me under general anaesthesia and make 3 incisions, they will introduce a small camera through one of these and use the other 2 to remove the appendix, everything will take 40 minutes maximum and then depending on how I recover, in the evening I could even go home. I looked at him sceptically and couldn't figure out where all this optimism came from. Well, it was exactly as he said.

A beautiful day

Honestly, it was the most beautiful medical experience I have ever had. At 5 in the morning they took me to the sick room (in an even more comfortable bed) - a two-person room (the other bed was unoccupied), with a huge window where I could see the sunrise sky over the city, and where everything was so clean: a private toilet - as clean as the bathroom at home, buttons all around the bed – so I could adjust the height of my pillow, I could call the nurse, I could get up, I could turn the lights on/ off . I also had a remote control and headphones for one of the two (!) TVs in the sick room. Never in my life have I ever seen such a comfortable sick room (maybe only in movies). Probably they are also in Romania at some hospitals, but certainly not at the County Hospital in Galati, nor at the Children's Hospital in Galati, nor at the University Hospital, Floreasca or Elias in Bucharest. At none of these hospitals did I see so much cleanliness and kindness of the medical staff - doctors and nurses who answer all your questions, fears, misunderstandings, always with a smile, patient and relaxed.

Here the visiting hours are between 13.00 and 21.00 (and Bogdan was allowed to stay with me also in the morning when I was admitted, until 7ish when they took me to the operation room, because it was quiet and were both sleepy - me in bed, him on the seat next to me). In Romania, you have two hours (2pm - 4pm most often) where you can visit the patient and otherwise you sneak in, giving money to the nurses in order to see your dear one a bit more or at later times, as if it is prison and not a hospital.

They brought me to the operating room still in the very comfortable, and Bogdan was smiling and telling me that everything will be fine and everyone on my way smiled and greeted me and I was in such a good mood, I was no longer feeling any pain and I knew that I will get rid of the operation without feeling anything. In the operating room, I had to leave the most comfortable bed to move to the extra lighted table and I came out of the blanket that I was wrapped in and I thought it would get cold, but I said nothing. And after I sat down on the operating table, an extremely beautiful nurse who kept smiling brought me a warm blanket that she put on me and god, what a feeling of happiness and relief I had. Then the anaesthetist connected me to everything (smiling continuously of course), she put the mask close to my face, then she told me "see you soon" and I fell asleep without realizing it. I woke up after the surgery, with some annoying cough in the "wake room". It was almost 12 o'clock and I was telling the nurse that I was in pain when I coughed. She said that it’s normal and that she is administrating me some painkillers through my perfusion and I will get more in the sick room. Within an hour I was already back in the very comfortable bed. I fell asleep and I woke up and again I wanted to sleep, I didn't feel any pain anymore and I felt good again in the comfortable bed.

The same day I managed to get up and go to the toilet (with a little help), in the evening I ate yogurt and jam and drank water and tea. I was not nauseous, I did not vomit, my head did not hurt, I did not have dizziness. I talked to my mom on the phone for a long time and I told her how excited I am about all this experience (especially since it didn't happen nearer to the wedding) and I read encouraging messages from my work colleagues, and Bogdan came and stayed with me and was glad that I was over this episode. Late in the evening they sent me home with a paracetamol prescription and some more painkillers, to take them to get through the first 4-5 days of normal pain. And in that same evening, I managed to climb the stairs at home, to the bedroom, to reach my bed (which was about as comfortable as the one in the sick room).

A thought

Of course, I was in pain and in the first few days I could only move a little, I could sleep only on my back, it was quite difficult to wash myself. Then it was better, I still had pain and I still have, but less and less and in no day were the pains as great as the ones before the surgery. Now I go up the stairs a few times a day and sleep on the left and the right side and I don't have any more pain when I laugh. I was left with an extraordinary sense of gratitude after this experience: generous doctors, nurses ready to help unconditionally, all young people, professionals, reliable and dedicated. Cleanliness and care. In the Belgian medical system, in all the interactions I had with so many medical professionals, I never felt guilty or ashamed that I became ill. No one was arguing with me and everyone, in their own way tried to do their best to make my life a little easier.

I never experienced these feelings in Romania. And I was once operated under general anaesthesia there, one time I was sent from one hospital to another to get the right treatment (3 times in the same day), waiting to get to the ER for long painful hours, having a perfusion while standing in the absence of one simple chair (!), facing doctors who scolded me as I was “wasting their time”, nurses who refused to put sheets (not change them, just put sheets) on the bed of a patient in serious condition, medical staff who do not talk to you and do not explain anything to you, and so many experiences that I want to forget or at least to make sure that my loved ones, will never (ever) have to live.

Cabo Verde ne-a cucerit/ All you need to know about Cabo Verde

[English version below]

  • Santo Antao (cea mai spectaculoasă în materie de vegetație, cea mai verde și preferată pentru drumeții - din experiențe povestite de toți turiștii pe care i-am întâlnit);
  • Sao Vicente (mică și cochetă, a fost un port extrem de important pentru transportul transatlantic, în special pentru că aici aveau un depozit de cărbune care alimenta vapoarele în tranzit - desigur, asta a dus la înflorirea orașului Mindelo, a cărui perioadă de glorie a apus însă atunci când lumea a evoluat de la vapoarele pe cărbune - din documentări anterioare);
  • Fogo (”insula cu vulcan”, cum o numește toată lumea - aș spune cea mai aridă, dar, din spusele turiștilor, merită explorată tocmai pentru vulcanul activa);
  • Sal (cea mai populară insulă, adună cei mai mulți turiști pentru plajele albe, apa turcoaz și nopțile interminabile de petrecere);
  • Boa Vista (aproape la fel de populară ca Sal, adună și ea sute de mii de turiști și are plaje superbe pe care să-și petreci o vacanță exotică);
  • Sao Nicolau (o altă insulă pe placul turiștilor, însă cu țărmuri stâncoase și piscine naturale care îi dau un farmec aparte - și mult mai liniștită decât în punctul de foc al turismului - Sal/ Boa Vista - din documentări și povești ale turiștilor);
  • Maio (o insulă mică, care i-a încântat pe mulți turiști prin peisajele ”virgine”, plaje nesfârșite și pustii și în general, puțini oameni - din povestirile celor care au trecut pe acolo);
  • Brava și Santa Luzia (nu am prea multe informații despre insulele astea două, Santa Luiza este extrem de mică și nu cred că am întâlnit niciun călător care să fi fost sau să plănuiască să meargă acolo);

Nouă ne-a plăcut tare mult experiența.

Why Cape Verde?

Five years ago, while visiting Portugal for the first time, I was listening to Cesaria Evora’s songs on the way from Lisbon to Cabo da Roca, while images of the coast and the wild ocean together troubled by the wind were seducing me. And then, there, I felt that I have to go and see this tiny part of the world, the place that inspired Cesaria to such sensibility and strength in her singing. So out of the curiosity back then, I organized this trip now.

Of course, the desire to get to a warm place whilst Europe is in the middle of its the cold winter has contributed a lot to us going to Cape Verde.

How it felt like

A peaceful happiness. Curiosity and understanding. Spectacular. Green shining in the sunset light. Waves conquering everything in their way. Deserted beaches, with only a ukulele whispering. Fishermen's beaches. Smiling and friendly people. Sunny days up to really hot days. Chilly evenings. Villages. Parties taken from the bars to the streets. Lots of fine music. Soft sand. Black sand. Rocks and ocean. Bays. Mountains. Images that take your breath away. Well cooked fish. Dust that does not bother. Palm trees. Coconut water. Slow pace. Local transport on winding roads. Discovery. The first place where the Portuguese landed and started colonising 500 years ago. Banana jam. Nice people. Many fruits. Maps. Strong blue. Warm light. Time.

About people & life there

Time doesn’t exist on Santiago Island. It’s the ocean that gives people a sense of direction, a reason of being, and a sense of belonging .The ocean works like a magnet and one always find one’s place near it. Fishermen are simple and friendly. The villages are small and poor, many look almost deserted. The animals are weak and as you move away from the ocean, everything is becoming increasingly dry: the land, the settlements, the faces of people. In the mountains, the island is reborn in a combination of green and copper - life and dust. People enjoy, sing and dance, play sports, everything is alive every moment. The Portuguese influence is felt in the capital, outside – it’s pure  Africa. Poverty is poignant, but no one seems to be taking it to heart too much. It is there and with a sort of resignation, people see other things that matter: the sun, the fishing, the cassava crops and the waiting. A place in the midst of summer in pristine state of waiting.

About Cape Verde

Cabo Verde is a small country, described by many as a harmonious mix of Africa and Portugal. It used to be a Portuguese colony, key point in the slave trade and in the transatlantic shipping routes. It is now facing economic struggles and live through financial aid from the EU, China and the US, after being systematically helped by the UN over the past decades. For its economy, there’s only tourism and, to a lesser extent, fishing. They speak Creole, but also a lot of Portuguese (which Creole is actually derived from) and although the people in Praia understand English, outside the city there are very few who speak anything but Creole/ Portuguese. It's also fairly easy to get along with people in French. Currently, Cape Verde has almost 500,000 inhabitants and two million nationals living abroad. Located in the Atlantic Ocean, it is made up of 10 islands - beautiful, diverse, charming, peaceful.

When we planned our trip, we looked for a lot of information and tips on what to choose as a destination, where to stay and what to see. We did not find much, so we were careful to gather as much practical information as possible - for future trips, for future travelers.

Hereby, the 10 islands:

• Santo Antao (the most spectacular in terms of vegetation, the most green and hikers’favourite);
• Sao Vicente (small and stylish, it used to be an extremely important port for transatlantic vessels, especially because here they had a coal depot that fed the ships in transit - of course, this led to the thriving of the city of Mindelo, but its glory period ended when the world moved on to oil-ships);
• Fogo (the "volcano island", as everyone calls it - I would say the most dry, arid, but, according to tourists, it is worth exploring it especially for the active volcano);
• Sal (the most popular island, gathers most of the tourists in Cape Verde for its white beaches, turquoise water and endless nights of party);
• Boa Vista (almost as popular as Sal, it also gathers hundreds of thousands of tourists and has beautiful beaches that attract people looking for an exotic holiday);
• Sao Nicolau (another island that pleases tourists, but with rocky shores and natural pools that create its special charm - and much more peaceful than the touristy ones - Sal / Boa Vista);
• Maio (a small island, which has delighted many tourists through its virgin nature, endless beaches and deserts and in general, few people);
• Brava and Santa Luzia (I don't have much information about these two, Santa Luiza is extremely small and I don't think I have met any travelers who have been or are planning to go there);
• Santiago - the last, but not least - the largest of the islands, where the country's capital (Praia) is situated, the administrative and economic center, the quiet ocean, lively beaches but also secret beaches, rocky coastline, mountains a little higher than 1000 m - basically, everything you could ask for.

Practical information

* From Europe, TUI Fly has direct flights to Boa Vista and Sal. TAP Portugal however flies from most European capitals with a stopover in Lisbon (to either Praia or Boa Vista). We preferred the stopover to Lisbon, where we ate an incredibly good fresh fish after being soaked in the rain downtown. In addition, if you have 3-4 hours stopover in Lisbon you can take a two-hour walk directly from the airport to the ocean, through some beautiful gardens (a tip got from a couple of great hiking enthusiasts and great lovers of Africa).

* We chose to stay at a Guesthouse for the whole trip of 8 days - with breakfast included, 5 minutes from the beach in Praia. A double room with balcony and bathroom, being cleaned daily, and with an additional large balcony of the entire  property where you could sit and read and watch the blue waves of the ocean. There are also few hotels in Praia, but their quality is about the same as that of the guesthouse and most are in the center of the city and therefore further away from the ocean (which would have meant no seaview). There are two 5 star hotels, also close to the beach, resort type, but they seemed somewhat isolated, much more expensive, and in terms of comfort they did not offer anything significantly better than what we had.

In the first days we walked only around the capital (on foot, by taxi, by local transport). The largest beach in Praia is now destroyed by a Chinese construction site that seems to be planning a large seaside resort. Unfortunately, no one is working and it seems that not much work has been done in recent years. So the main beach has become Kebra Canela, which is quite large, clean and quiet. The alternative is a very small and fancy beach with loungers, in a small bay, which seems to be frequented exclusively by tourists. There is still another beach beyond the harbor, which is a bit difficult to reach and there you can find maximum two fishermen during the day. But it is so beautiful and the water is so clear and clean and the beaches are all very clean too.

In the following days we rented a car and saw the rest of the island. In Tarrafal, the northernmost city, the beach is slightly more exciting than in Praia and there are several bars and restaurants for tourists. It's even cheaper than in Praia, so I think Tarrafal is a better accommodation option in the future.

* Local transport is cheap and is a good alternative. In Praia taxis are everywhere, you wave and they stop. Any trip costs ex officio 200 CVE (escuados), the equivalent of 2 euros. To go to the neighboring villages/ cities, even to Tarrafal or to the mountains, to Assomada, you can use the local transport. And here prices are somehow "as much as you want to give", depending on the distance of course. Yasi (Toyota vans) wait to be filled by passengers at the departure point (always the same) and only then they depart. On the road, the driver can stop wherever you ask and can take other passengers. The journey does not last too long and is relatively comfortable. We really liked the experience.

The alternative of renting a car, however, gives you more freedom of movement. It is not difficult to find (there are more than 5 rental companies in Praia) and the prices are slightly higher than on the mainland. Gasoline is about 1 euro/ liter (which is better than in Belgium, but very expensive for Cape Verde). The main roads are good and not very busy.

To travel between islands – you have to use the ferry or the plane. There are plenty of flights between the big islands, and tickets can be found even on the day. Also valid for the ferry (although of course a trip will take a little longer on the water). The big disadvantage is that these forms of transport are irregular, so you can stay on an island for a few days, maybe even a week longer than you planned (because flights are often delayed or even canceled and so are ferry trips).

* The local food is tasty and healthy. It's not extraordinarily varied, but you can find fish and seafood in all forms, tasty rice, beans and very tasty vegetables (cachupa – their traditional meal), fresh fruits, fruity ice-cream and coconut/ banana cakes. Local beer, white wine and green wine as well as capirinha are very popular at bars and restaurants in Santiago.

* Must see & do: Cidade Velha (old town), very close to Praia, the shore on which the Portuguese landed - the fortress at the top of the hill looks over the village, and in the center you can still walk on the cobbled streets with houses built out of stone hundreds of years ago, in the market where souvenirs are sold today were once sold the slaves. In Praia - the lighthouse, the rocky shores, the city center (Plateau), the market full of fruits and vegetables from the center, the artisans who make all kinds of souvenirs, live music at Quintal do Musica (you can also eat well there). Excellent traditional food is also at Caixa Cachupa and As Campanas (where on the weekend there’s live music on the terrace). Assomada and the road from Praia to Assomada, in the mountains, winding roads with incredible landscapes - hiking and admiring everything at ease. Praia do Baixo - a simple beach and most often deserted, with a restaurant in the far corner, all wrapped up in an empty village  at the end of the world. East coast - full of spectacular rocky bays, banana plantations, palm trees and black sand beaches. Tarrafal - the most touristy city on Santiago, although smaller than Praia or Assomada, has a magnificent beach and a terrace in the middle of the ocean, between two bays, where you can admire the waves breaking on both sides. Great food here too, colorful bars and of course, the endless souvenir stalls. Further north of Tarrafal is a bay with a pristine beach, beyond the green fields, which is worth the effort to get there.

For a local guide, good and friendly, we met this guy who told us a lot of interesting things. We haven't been able to join him on one of his tours, but we would have loved to, so we fully recommend him: https://www.facebook.com/tourcapverd/

* Security: Santiago does not have a very high criminality rate, we felt safe at all times, most places (institutions, hotels/ residences, restaurants, banks, etc.) have guards and in general, people are peaceful. Fortunately, we didn't have to deal with thieves either.

* Budget: The national currency is CVE (Cabo Verde Escuados) and 1 euro = 110 escuados, but most often the parity is 1 euro = 100 escuados. In most places you can pay either in escuados, or in euros, or even escuados + euros. In Praia there are many places where paying by card is accepted, but mainly cash is preferred.

Although it is a truly poor country, prices are made for tourists, so don't expect everything to be extremely cheap. A two-course meal for two people and two glasses of wine cost on average 40 - 50 euros in the south of Santiago (Praia or Cidade Velha) and around 30 euros in the north, in Tarrafal. Renting a small car cost us 140 euros for 3 days (the theoretical insurance was included, basically it was limited to the guy from the company telling us: "if you have a problem, call me").

Accommodation was the highest expense (excluding flights of course) and was 400 euros for 7 nights with breakfast included. The round-trip flight from Brussels (for two people) cost us 700 euros. At the end of the trip, for the whole  8 days (two people) for flights, accommodation, car rental, food, entertainment, souvenirs, we spent approximately 2000 euros.
Memories from our entire adventure are gathered on our travelers’ Instagram: @2&200trips, because Cape Verde won our hearts completely. Surprising and colorful and full of rhythm, we want to taste it more, to discover it more,  to be there again...

2019 - Persistența iubirii/ The persistance of love

[English version below]

Sper că timpul are să îmi arate calea.

~

I haven't written anything here for so long that I almost forgot how liberating and enjoyable the feeling of aligning words is. I haven't written anything here since May ... However, 2019 continued to challenge me and surprise me beyond the dream engagement moment in Porto.

The last 6 months of 2019 have passed so fast and I almost didn't even realize that I lost a few important pieces of who I am. I betrayed the writing and the music and the deep emotion because I was trapped in life's complications. I'm not writing to complain. I write now because I had a break and took a step back and so I was able to analyze, understand, find myself.

2019 has been a long and busy year. A move to Belgium with all the stuff crammed into a car, a move that came as a joy and a relief but also with a lot of responsibility. In October, moving out again. This time, in a house with a huge garden - and the joy after we drew the line and we calmed down. Our engagement and the start of planning the wedding as we want it to be. A lot of travel and a lot a lot of work.

I think 2019 was the year when I traveled more than ever - in Belgium as much as possible, in the Netherlands about 3 times, in Paris twice, in Romania twice, in Nessebar - in Bulgaria, Portugal - in Porto and on the Douro Valley, on the west coast of Ireland. This year, we started gathering all our travelling experiences on Instagram (@2and200trips) - because we are planning to take 200 trips that we will document visually. Then all the work travel: Washington, Craiova, Skopje (twice), Batumi (twice), Kyiv, London/ Watford. There were so many trips that in the winter holiday all I wanted was to stay at home.  Which I did for around two weeks. We had all our dearest people visiting so we took time to rest both physically and mentally.

All these stories might seem wonderful, and it’s true, especially when you take your time and see it from the outside. Every experience of the past year has revealed to me important parts of the human being that I want to be. However, what isn’t obvious at all beyond all these happy events, accomplishments, successes and beauties that we have gathered in the past year is the huge amount of work involved. Work on all fronts - personal, professional, and emotional. Fight, torment, will and more fight.

My job involves a lot of work. From September to December I did not have a single day off, I worked on average over 12-13 hours a day, with weekends, evenings, nights and especially continuous stress. A stress that crushed me every moment (even in those moments when I was not working). At nights I only dreamed of work situations and the only thing I wanted in the evenings when I didn't have work was to totally disconnect. I am still learning how to keep this sphere of my working environment in a a box that I would only open when I am at work. I hope time will show me the way to do it.

However, moving to the new house also consumed all the little energy I was left. An endless battle with Belgian landlords who would do whatever it takes to scam you for as much money as possible - with or without a good reason (often without). In addition, the bureaucracy in this country beats a lot the one in Romania by the simple fact that besides hundreds of procedures, here you are hit by the absurdity of each situation and you must somehow continue and follow the rules. So, in the country where it is a struggle to open a contract for water, one for energy, to wait weeks for a company to come and check the radiators (and need 3 visits to check 3 different radiators), in the country where you work for an international organization and have a special ID, issued by national authorities - you have to fight to explain to the same authorities why you have a special ID, in the country where you have to pay 2 visits to the police (for questioning, investigation, etc.) so that you can pay a traffic ticket, where it is a struggle to get the document through which you have declare your income and pay your taxes, where realtors ask you for hundreds of euros in cash in order to start filling in the forms for renting a house and where you have to pass 3 interviews with some other realtors in order to be considered eligible to rent a place in Leuven, in the country where it takes a month to understand how to sort garbage and where to buy the right bags, bins and boxes and especially when and how to get rid of them ...

As I said, in this country where everything is a struggle, we managed to settle for a longer period - with almost ten trips to Ikea and many more other to markets and furniture stores, we took hundreds of trips to see houses (at least several tens) and to solve bureaucratic problems, we were on hold for tens of hours on the phone (to solve other bureaucratic problems), we looked for options, solutions, we were stressed, we quarreled, we were postponed, disappointed , angry, we were close to giving up, we fought with the foreigners, with Belgium and Belgians, with the Romanians, with us, with everything and anything, so that we could finally get the so much desired stability.

Life in two, as a couple, was another thing this year taught me how to manage. A relationship is built. I always believed that, but I think that at the age of 25, I found in me all the necessary resources (maturity, responsibility, understanding, patience - I'm still working on this one) to know how to properly fit the bricks of such a construction. We are beautiful and good and we love each other and we will never give up. But last year our relationship transformed under all the responsibilities of life, under the stress of everyone's work and frustrations related to daily injustices (from work, from bureaucracy, from being far away from our loved ones). But somehow, we needed time to get to know each other better and to know how we react and what we need and how to talk or stop talking, when and especially what to do.  I think the main source of conflict this long and difficult year,  was the different way we position ourselves towards everything around us - especially how much importance each of us attaches to something. What is very important to me may be almost insignificant to Bogdan. Of course, we are not talking about major things here (family, home, happiness), but those little things that fill our lives. We both understood ourselves - what matters to me and what does not matter to him, what each of us needs and why, how we react when we are pressured from all sides and we are no longer able to find ourselves and I think overall, 2019 has put us two face to face and also made us face our inner selves – which taught us a great lesson – deep down inside it’s what matters most, that’s our safe place - only from there our love can feed us – and everything on the outside is ephemeral.

Maybe 2019 was long and complicated but it was also such a rich year - it raised me and showed me again, that dreams come true, that people can be good, but also that I have to be better, that I still have so much to discover and grow, and especially that anything that is gained after hard effort and with so much energy and work is a million times more valuable reward.

Visul meu îl trăiesc chiar acum/ Living the dream

English version below

***

When I was a little girl I was thinking that at the age of 25 it’s quite the right time, not too early or too late to have the most important things in life perfectly settled.

At the age of 15 I wanted to be a grown up in order to get rid of the school's obligations - and actually, to learn and read what I like, as much as I like it, when I like it. I wanted a kind of freedom but not the one you want in adolescence, but I wanted to be an adult sooner, to be in the lead of my own life and make it better. Now I'm glad I'm an adult ‘cause I can eat dessert before the meal and I can eat the same food (however unhealthy it is) as often as I want. And basically, I can stay up to watch movies until very late (I think, in fact, these are the biggest rewards of adult life :))

At 20, I thought there was a lot of time in front of me and I started to build in all directions, quite chaotic, hoping it would be good at some point.

When I was 23, I was in the process of growing - building. Perhaps more chaotic than ever, aiming for everything, heading towards anywhere. That's when I realized that the 25-year plan is not exactly a plan, but more of a dream that will come when it's going to happen.

Between 24 and 25 years, my chaotic way of building made me stop for a while to realize I'm confused and I'm not clear to where I'm going, and certainly I have no clue what’s the best way to get there.

I know there are no recipes for what and how to do. But I believe a lot in inner recipes, and in knowing that what you are doing is 'the right way' and that, at some point, you will look back with joy, thanking yourself for your choices. I have to admit that I have often doubted myself and what I was doing and what I was pursuing - I asked myself hundreds if not even a thousand times if I chose well, if the sacrifices were not too big, if it was worth it and if I will ever get there, where my dreams were aiming.
At the beginning of the year I made my luggage and took the chance to get back to NATO and to Brussels. Initially for 6 months. I was going to lay the foundation (again) of my future without being sure that this was the right direction to follow.

But somehow, a few months before I was 25, I had forgotten about the old idea of being settled at this age. Somehow, I was going to what I felt was good, and I think I finally understood that there are no deadlines in life, but there is a time for everything – although not when we want or decide, but there is the right time for certain things, certain experiences and certain people.

I truly wanted to share this story for you and for me - to realize that at 25, my life has found its way by itself. Of course, with a lot of help from all this effort that I’ve put into and much help from my closest and dearest people. Instead of 25 could have been 29, 33 or any other number would have suited the person I am. 25 was, apparently, my number.

At the age of 25, I have a man who left all his life behind him and moved with me to a country where he did not speak the language and where he had nothing set in terms of professional options. But he did it wholeheartedly, enrolled in a French course, and three months later he gave interviews in French and took a good job with immense responsibilities.

At the age of 25 - and more precisely on my birthday, I had my family with me and I took them to the place I love most in this world - Paris. It was my perfect gift - to be independent enough to take my parents to Paris and enjoy a glass of wine in Montmartre on April 25th to celebrate that we are together and that I have become a grown up.

At 25, I have a stable job for (at least) the next 3 years, in a place where I like to work every single day - a job that can not bore me for a second and where I have the finest bosses (who don’t even read my blog) and the best colleagues I could ever ask for.

At 25, I live in a quiet and bright apartment with a terrace full of flowers of all kinds. And, very important, I have a lot of pillows and fluffy blankets and scented candles.

And at the age of 25, the dream of being proposed in Porto, with all the beautiful port and  the Duoro river in the background - was fulfilled. Plain and simple - I think I was given the chance to live the most exciting and moving moment of my life so far. So I'm now engaged and more than that, I do not cease to feel amazed and grateful that my love is shared – my love for Bogdan, my love for my parents & wonderful friends with whom I collect smiles and memories for eternity.

At the age of 25, more than anything I have, it’s all about everything I am - I am a happy person who feels the fulfillment of every day - who enjoys it and works to preserve it and cultivate it further. I am so lucky to have taken thin good and bright road, which I did not work for in vain, and I’m lucky to have missed most of this world’s evils.

I am loved and surrounded by good, warm and beautiful people who have made me what I am, who make me what I will become. And that means, in fact, that I’m living my dream now.

Thank you.
