Din 2022 către 2023 - reminiscențe de clipe/ The remains of 2022

[English version below]

2022

2022

A few days at the beginning of the year in Vilnius, with friends and adventures.

A long sunny weekend in Barcelona at the end of January, Bogdan's surprise birthday present, the first restaurant with two Michelin stars I went and left me speechless.
10 days in Mexico - with sun, turquoise waters, delicious food, picturesque villages, natural wonders, but also an atmosphere deeply charged with tourism and superficiality. Everything is to be bought.

Almost two months of anticipation of war and 10 months of terrible and aggressive war waged by Putin's Russia against Ukraine. 10 times more work, more pressure, more emotional involvement. Feelings of futility, helplessness, uncertainty.

Whole months full of work on two master's degrees, in addition to the daily job.
Few weeks to write my master's thesis for the VUB Master Program.

Searches, applications, interviews to grow more professionally. I feel it’s time.

Summit in Madrid. The most challenging, interesting, successful, complicated event and an experience that I am glad to have lived, beyond all the days and nights of supreme efforts, changes, anticipations and obstacles.

A few days more in Madrid to wander around, immerse myself in its great museums, and enjoy the laid-back spirit of the south.

Romania in spring - summer. Getting together with our people. Days filled with initiatives, enthusiasm, new directions, hopes, future projections, book fairs, concerts, movies. We became wedding godparents, baptism godparents, we were there for our dear ones who were starting their marriages. Our hearts were full of pure emotion, we were enriched as a family and the same were our perceptions of life.

Beginning of August and Turkey for the first time. Calm Canakkale and seductive sunsets over the Aegean sea, what a wonderful world.

An incredible autumn in Brussels, with unprecedentedly warm weather, afternoons with perfect light and an endless gallop between home, work, finalizing my master and personal projects.

10 days in New York, with the yellow cab from JFK to Manhattan, with MoMA and the Guggenheim and Chinatown and Little Italy and Central Park and the MET and jazz concerts and the High Line and Veselka and the David LaChapelle exhibition and the East Village and happy eyes like of kids seeing NYC from the 82nd floor and wandering the streets late into the night -- we lived the best days of our lives.

A ministerial in Bucharest, the last one this year, almost at home. A lot of fatigue, but a great team that made things easier.

Months of many turmoils, (im)possibility, challenges, disappointments, more questions than answers and so many ambitions.

End of October in Paris and strolling through the gardens of Versailles. The beauty of being in love with the magical lands of France.

Dinner and gatherings with friends, stories, new moments to add to the memory albums, late nights, warm hugs.

8 months of pregnancy that passed through it all, more good than bad.

Christmas in two, almost 3, at our home in Brux and a New Year's Eve here too, with dear people, who bring us joy, kindness and sincere friendship.

In total, 12 seconds of happiness, high expectations and unexpected developments. Another year in which I lived as much as I could fit into an entire life, intensely, deeply, crazily, terribly, as if there was no tomorrow.

But tomorrow is new, ready for other adventures, happenings, mountain tops conquered and depths of oceans explored. Tomorrow is already 2023 and I'm thinking: such a luck, such a burden, such a beauty - the wealth of time that a fresh year offers us.

Wishing you a year with love, because only love makes everything fine and brings us a little closer to perfection!

Spania detaliilor/ The Spain of Details

~

The details of Spain, like a piercing but somehow calm sun, like the fine dust of the street leading to the sea, like a particular song hummed at a party on an unknown beach, like the hot stoned village at noon, like salt flakes over the steaming vegetables, like the greenery bathed in the invisible music of every step, every corner, every fragment of life.

Details of Spain, like Spain as a whole - a full passion, a real-time snatch for an extra moment of ... Spanish guitar chord.

2021 Anul Ecou/ The Echo Year

[English version at the bottom]

Simt cât de veselă-i viața uneori.

Am clipit. E miezul verii.

2021 was the Echo Year for me, the year that sounded strongest within me, the year that I will feel beating loudly like another heart of mine, until the end of time.

We started with a champagne at midnight, on the terrace of the house, looking at the sky and enjoying the moment with a small group of friends - we celebrate the first minutes of "Our Year".

I blinked. We listen to rock music and dance and call our parents and friends from afar, to enjoy together the first moments of 2021.

I blinked. We bravely leave for Zanzibar, we don't know what to expect, we discover a new world, mysterious places, like in novels about unseen lands and an endless summer kind of peace. White, infinite beaches, clear waters, sunsets and sunrises as in paintings and a pure and simple joy of existence.

I blinked. We're going to Romania, we're renovating a studio. I look at my reddened and suffering hands, because I rubbed the tile full of paint with so many chemicals. Work of all kinds is hard, but physical work seems the hardest. This renovation takes an enormous amount of time and a collective effort of so many dear people who give us a hand. Gratitude.

I blinked. Romania again. A spring place between the hills, in the countryside, near a monastery. We are here with the extended family and it is so beautiful, with good spirits, ’cozonac’, grilled lamb and red-painted eggs. We go for the church service at midnight, we ’take’ light from the monastery. Unfortunately, the sermon sounds bad and does not bring us that spiritual fulfillment we were hoping, but we have the holy light and this comforts us.

I blinked. I work hard, as usual. We are preparing a Summit. The 4th since I've been working here. I feel like my thoughts, my senses, my anxieties are all taken hostage by this event. These are the hottest weeks in Belgian history. I feel like I'm melting every day because of the heat, stress, fatigue and a plethora of tasks. Two days of Summit. Everything is crazy, I don't realize how it goes, but things are going well. I feel a little proud, which not even my exhaustion can dismiss.

I blinked. We're going to Mirela and Alex's wedding. I have my tulip dress and a lady stops me on the street to tell me I'm pretty. We laugh and dance late into the night. I feel how happy life is sometimes.

I blinked. It's mid-summer. We drive through France, then Mallorca, then northern Spain. We drive a lot, the sun caresses me. Every night, I feel my skin salty from the sea water. I discover Goya's Zaragoza and I almost fall in love with this completely warm, young city. I enter the Sagrada Familia for the first time and Gaudi impresses me to tears. In Bilbao, I live the fulfillment of my teenage dream: the Guggenheim Museum. How rich life is.

I blinked. Kabul is falling. History is written in a painful way. I eagerly read everything I can. Humanity breaks my heart. At night, I say a prayer for the people there...

I blinked. We get married, at home, in Romania, in the church and in a palace, with the whole family and all those we sincerely love and who love us so much that they are with us. The world takes on a different meaning. I understand the next day that I have lived the happiest day of my life.  ”I say to the Moment flying: 'Linger a while -- you're so beautiful ...".

I blinked. We are in Romanian seaside, with our godparents, with friends, with a cold wine and with live folk music. We dance and everything around disappears - it's just us in the whole universe. I am filled with music, with the happy faces of them all, with lyrics sung out loud by all of us, with the madness of the moment, now and for eternity.

I blinked. We go to the wedding in the countryside, to Miha and Bogdan’s wedding, these people who deserve all the good in the world to be gifted to them. Everything is so beautiful and poetic. The September sun embraces the big, full quinces. We are full heartedly with them, for them. We have traditional music, we have a bonfire at night and we defy the cold and the forest. This is how a miracle is born.

I blinked. It's Autumn at home. It's a perfect light in the garden and throughout the house. Friends are coming to visit. Some stay for longer, others only for dinner, we feel loved and lucky to have them all in our lives.

I blinked. After almost 12 hours on the road, we arrive in Făgăraș for another wedding. A golden light falls shyly on the Carpathian mountains’ tops - I smile at them from the car that takes us to the party. Simina and Dragos match up perfectly – serenity was born with their union.

I blinked. I'm in an amphitheater at VUB, taking notes for a course. I feel less of a dedicated student than I was a few years ago, but certainly more informed. I started a master's degree for exploring and learning more. I am passionate and I like the course of the discussions. On weekends, when I'm not reading for this master's degree, I'm at the online master's degree courses in Romania. I admit, I started two masters, because I never do things half-way and I certainly don't like light times.

I blinked. I work a lot. I'm going to Stockholm in preparation for an official visit. It is the first place where the mask does not exist and nothing could indicate a global pandemic. I have a tiny hotel room and I suffer terribly from lack of air. On the fourth day, on a frigate in the middle of the sea - deep cold, rain and wind. "There is no bad weather, just bad clothing," I learned from the Secretary General. On the last day in Sweden, we set off with a pastel sunrise in the crispy Nordic air. And I feel a little proud of myself and of the work I do.

I blinked. Autumn in the Eterna Citta, Rome. So much history and character that I feel this city overwhelming – especially due to Michelangelo's paintings in the Sistine Chapel. The Vatican is impressive, we walk tens of kilometers every day and we never get tired of discovering, understanding, wondering, tasting and promising ourselves to come back here again and again and again.

I blinked. We are going to Berlin - Romanians, Scots and Poles - a group of people so alive and so cool that Berlin could have been any hidden place in this world and it would still have been a memorable trip. We understand some of the deeper dimensions of the Germans and I am glad that we have the chance to be here, to see, to remember. It's 3 in the morning and we walk the still very much alive streets of Berlin, we listen to Dutch music and ah, these moments are the clearest answer to "why life is worth living".

I blinked. I'm in Riga, where it's -4 degrees during the day. We are holding a meeting of allied ministers. It's a lot of work, but the people we work with, the Latvians, are the best people to work with: they listen, understand, apply - they are respectful, efficient and always full of good vibes. For 3 days it snows continuously, on the window I see everything like a fairy tale. I'm so lucky I'm here. One evening, I walk through the old city center and the sound of snow under my boots is a satisfying mix of childhood memories and childhood illusions. It's all white and I look at the bright sky even during the night – it reminds me of the sky of the snow-covered Galați, when I was in high school and I was taking my first black and white pictures on film, in the "park T". Freeze-frame.

I blinked. Christmas is coming. We go to Bucharest, then to Galati. We have beautifully wrapped gifts for everyone. It's not snowing, but it's the loved ones who make all the magic of the holidays. Good food, decorated Christmas trees, presents, carols. Home, my other home. What a privilege to have a home wherever we love and are loved.

I blinked. We're flying to Vilnius. It's snowing a little, then it's freezing rain. We slip on the sidewalks. People wear thick coats, it's that clean cold of the deep winter. The year ends, at midnight we are together with other dear friends, we listen to Lithuanian music, we don't understand anything but we feel joy, celebration, a positive energy. With a thought I bring all our loved ones with us here. 2022 will be such a Beautiful Year.

O nuntă cât o viață/ The wedding of a lifetime

[English version below]

Partea a III-a - Petrecerea

E-o nebunie a simțurilor.

Part III - The Party

We arrive at the Palace. We go up the imposing staircase. In the ballroom, everything is like a dream, more beautiful than I could have imagined in recent weeks. The lights are set in perfect harmony with the architecture of the palace. Sweet music is filling the room. On each table, just as I wished for, there’s a white tulip dipped in a vase of water. Adi takes a few photos with the two of us, in the greatness of the room. We are so clumsy and awkward and do not know how to pose or to stand in front of the camera. So we quickly give up the idea that we could do a real photo shooting.

We sit on the edge of the stage, like two lovers, almost indifferent of our wedding clothing or all the deployment of forces that a wedding entails. This is our moment of intimacy, the moment when we feel like the world is ours, the moment when we look at each other almost laughing because we finally made it, we got married, and we are here, at the sunrise of the biggest party of our life. Maybe I'm tired or I'm hungry or thirsty, but I basically feel nothing bad, I have nothing to worry about, just a happy inner peace. I feel that I am getting floating in an immaterial state - a translucent euphoria that pushes me to look around with immeasurable happiness. I am ready to welcome my people, to dance, to sing, to enjoy their presence at fullest, to take advantage of every minute we are here, all of us, as in a time without time.

The first guests arrive at 5:05 p.m. My French ladies, Teona and Olga - become instant memories makers – as they are the ones who photograph us with all our guests on arrival and do so with such dedication and caring that I feel so loved, as if all the love in the universe was just for me, and for us two. We greet everyone. And one by one, our favourite people in the whole world line up almost until behind the palace doors, and I feel so small and I don't want anyone to feel neglected or waiting for too long. But our godparents are there, as if intuiting our concern, and they go and talk to the people who are waiting and entertain them, and it seems to me that things are falling into place as in an impeccably tuned orchestra. And I smile again at myself, because there is simply no need for any worries in all the wonder of this day.

It's almost 19.00 and it's time for the opening waltz. Our dance that we only rehearsed for a few minutes in the last few weeks. But I hold his hand, I know he is very nervous especially for the first part - the waltz, but I know he will be fine, we will be fine. Shostakovich's Waltz Number 2 begins, I chose it because I consider it the pure essence of what a waltz is. We start a bit hesitating, slightly insecure. We get to the centre of the dancefloor and there we see all our people - who look at us so lovingly. That's all I understand from their energy. Their love and their support. And I know in the next moment that we can't go wrong, because they won't see any mistake, they will see us, in our love, dancing as good as we feel. We fumble for a few steps, I can feel him smiling and he manages to carry on. We turn around and then I detach myself from  the dance floor, I live my waltz just as I dreamed it, like in a fairy tale. I’m stepping on my dress, he is stepping on my shoe, nothing goes wrong, I hear everyone cheering us, I feel them all like a soothing image, it feels so good.

Shostakovich whispers, there is only a fine sound that now grows into the twist from Pulp Fiction. I take off my shoes in the middle of the dancefloor and wait ... for the groom. It takes him a little (too) long to take off his shoes (as he has his laces tight with 3 knots each). The music grows, laughter fills the room, it fills me too. I shed tears of joy. DJ Mushi stops the music, awaiting the barefoot groom. I imagine he feels the pressure, but we're all kidding and it's so beautiful. We start the twist of Uma Thurman and Travolta, in fact, more like our own twist, releasing all the nervousness, all the emotions, and all our enthusiasm. I’m dancing as if there’s no tomorrow. I enjoy so much these couple of minutes, I think of Tarantino when he directed this scene, then I think of the two of us – so in love with movies and music - nothing would have spoken more clearly about who we are than such a moment. Applause and cheering. Love directly proportionate with the amount of the applause. It's a madness of all the senses. Hippie and his band start playing loudly, the dance floor is full in half a second - everyone is dancing, it's more beautiful than our thoughts would have ever imagined. It's a show, a festival, a perpetual poetry.

I feel everything like an ecstasy of colors, lights, music, laughter, lyrics shouted at the top of our lungs, odd steps, synchronized steps, joy, friends and family spinning in tune with guitar sounds - frenzy. It's like in another world, where we were born in complete happiness and that's the only way we know how to live. I don't know how the songs flow - one after the other - the clink of glasses - the laughter on the terrace - our people gathered here by us, with us, for us. I look at them and again I am full of emotion thinking how many of them made me who I am today, how much they meant for my path, and there’s so much poetry and so much magic to this moment...

It's getting late. They want to kidnap from me. I'm going with Mishu and his girlfriend. Adi, the photographer, and Adorian, the videographer, are crowded in the back of the car. It seems incredible to me because I am only now aware of their presence. They've been invisible until now. They have reached the ultimate goal - to be with us everywhere, without us realizing it. In the car, however, there is too little space for two invisible people. I think of them tenderly – were they able to immortalize our lives for the past hours ?! I'm not worried, I know that Adi knows how to photograph more sensations than portraits, more what is beyond people than what is in appearance ... We start this crazy ride through an almost empty Bucharest. Mishu drives like a frantic - that's how Mishu drives. I remember when I went in his car from the Cotroceni shopping centre, back when we were interns, to the student dorm rooms and I was so scared that I kept my eyes closed for the entire trip - 5 minutes that felt like 5 hours. I tell him I don't want to be scared again and he calms down a bit. We reach CTRL bar. Cipi arrives too (I will never be able to call her Elena, she will be Cipi for me until the end of time). And Avril and Ronald, because they were also behind the whole kidnapping. People in the bar are ecstatic that a bride has entered the bar. In Romania, it is said that it brings good luck to see a bride and it seems that suddenly everyone there believed  this superstition. I never thought it would be comfortable for me to be in the spotlight. But I'm fine, we laugh and joke and dance again. The flash of Adi's camera, a few Polaroid shots, we clink our glasses happily and celebrate life again - L'chaim, as the Jews say.

Mishu wants us to go to another bar. I approve, because after all, everything that happens tonight is once in a lifetime. Only once - and we all know that. In the second bar, people are even more eager to party with us. We are a funny bunch – dressed up ladies and gentlemen, a bride and a motley group of young men from a hipster bar. I giggle until Misu takes me up in his arms and we go back. He leaves me waiting at the entrance of the Palace and takes my shoe in order to negotiate my return with the groom. I don't know what they’ve manages to negotiate, but I really miss Bogdan and my wedding party. Mishu still carries me up in his arms and takes me back to the dancefloor. There’s light, my light, it feels good. And with that I was a kidnapped and recovered bride.  I’m dancing to Hippie's "Whim" song ... "Evening whim in her eyes ..." , in the arms of the man who is everything to me.

The cake is here - 4 layers of chocolate, more chocolate forest fruits. When we discussed the wedding preparations and got to the cake part, I found out the shocking truth that often only one layer of the cake is real, the others are used as decoration – they are cardboard. This saddened me terribly and I started my little revolution and the people from the palace understood me and managed to make us a cake with 4 real layers of chocolate for the magical, almost unreal moments that we are experiencing tonight. We all sing "La multi ani" („many years to come”) and our dear godparents are close to us.  We are pushing the night towards the day, the night of our greatest moment of our lives, the night of eternal happiness, just as the wind blows in the sails, unstoppable, with force, with passion, and with a timeless grace. Many more years to come for us and for all those who are our dear friends and family. I wish they will always be ours, in all the years to come.

It’s closing time and the party slowly melts away, the music seems to start becoming lucid again, and with it we all became earthly again. I am hugging warm and kind people and I don't want to cry and I don't want to say goodbye, but I want to make them feel the immense gratitude I have. I want them to read in my eyes the friendship, the love, the longing - all gathered in me in a lifetime since I met them and on this wedding day as a whole life. I do not know if all of them, our people, understood that our wedding would not have been this amazing celebration without them and there are no words in any language of the world to describe how lucky and loved we have the honor to feel in the very second.

Epilogue and Prologue

We arrived at the hotel around 4 or 5 in the morning. I remember walking barefoot in the hallways to thank Adi and Hippie, and we sat down with them to exchange impressions. They were happy - tired but happy, just like us – tired, but with this sense of fullfilment. I didn't feel tired at all, I just felt that my body didn't want to listen to me anymore, that it only wanted to rest for a bit, and I wanted to enjoy just one more minute and then another one and then another of this miraculous day.

Back to our room, I look at Bogdan with the biggest smile he ever had – smiling with his eyes and his heart. He has sparks in his eyes and I understand that he also feels pure, complete happiness.

In the morning, on the top of our bed, we taste the cake – we got a large slice packed for us last night. We laugh wholeheartedly and scrutinize the roofs of the old town and the new world. It is the beginning of our married life: it began with the happiest day.
